Spring Break in Bandera, TX in March 2007

Date of LAST EDIT = 05/04/2007

We drove from Houston to Bandera, TX during the evening of the first Saturday of spring break. We arrived past midnight and found our room key in the mailbox outside the office. We unpacked a few essentials and hit the sack for a good night's sleep. In the morning, we did our official check-in and picked up some literature regarding tourist attractions in the surrounding area. We got a late start, but the first thing we did was go eat lunch at Busbee's BBQ in town.

During our week in Bandera, we did typical tourist things like visiting the state capital in Austin, the Stonehenge replica in Hunt, TX, the African Safari Animal Ranch near Johnson City, and some underground cave with no name north of Boerne. Although we made a grocery run at the Super-Walmart in Kerrville, we still went out to eat quite frequently.

While in Austin we had lunch with Tom's uncle Vic at the Iguana Cafe overlooking Lake Travis. We also got to visit with our friends John and Melisa and their daughter Aubrey, all of whom we knew from when they previously lived in Pearland. Elizabeth and Tom also took a stroll down Sixth Street during the South by Southwest Music Festival. It was a rather colorful experience, which reminded us of some leisure days in college.

Tom was surprised to learn about the Stonehenge replica in Hunt, Texas. It is a 3/4 size reproduction of the actual thing in the UK. The property owners also planted near their Stonehenge a few replica statues of those located on Easter Island. It gave Tom a few geeky ideas for decorating his back yard.

Our tour of the Safari Animal Ranch was pleasant. We rode around in a safe transport vehicle pulled by a tractor, much like being on a hayride. However, this vehicle had safety bars throughout and passengers carried buckets of food pellets to throw to (or at) the animals. There weren't any unicorns, elephants, or rhinos, but we did see alot of unusual species that are not native to this continent.

The "Cave with no Name" got its name from a naming contest conducted by the property owner back in the 1930's. Personally, I thought it was more impressive than several caves I've seen that do have names. It's amazing to see what God can create with a few laws of physics and hydraulics to govern the flow of water and the deposition of minerals. I would certainly recommend this tourist attraction to anyone vacationing in the Bandera area.

After our vacation week was over, we drove back home and re-emerged into the chaotic mess of Houston traffic, complete with a shutdown of a large stretch of Interstate 10 near Beltway 8 on the west side of town. It was a dim reminder of the city in which we live. We ended up taking a circuitous route along Hwy 6 to get home, so as to avoid some of the traffic congestion.
